Vacant Australasian women’s Welterweight title

Louise Creaven v Connie Chan

Vacant Australasian women’s Welterweight title. 19th October 2024, Mercure Resort, Gold Coast.

From the opening bell, it was clear that Connie intended to disrupt Louise’s rhythm. Connie’s approach was aggressive, employing a rough-and-tumble style that aimed to make the bout physical and uncomfortable. She pressed forward, throwing wild punches and attempting to smother Louise’s boxing technique.

However, Louise highlighted her boxing intelligence. Initially, she found herself in the thick of the action, engaging in close quarters, which played into Connie’s hands. As the rounds progressed, it became apparent that Louise’s strength lay in her movement and tactical fighting.

Round Breakdown

  • Rounds 1-3: Connie started strong, landing some solid shots, and making the fight messy. Louise, though, managed to score with counterpunches, keeping the fight at distance where she controlled Connies aggression.
  • Rounds 4-6: Louise began to implement her game plan with more confidence. By maintaining distance and utilizing her footwork, she avoided Connie’s wild swings and follow up clinch tactics. Louise’s jabs became more effective, keeping Connie at bay.
  • Rounds 7-8: With confidence growing, Louise highlighted her superior boxing skills. She displayed excellent lateral movement, evading punches and creating angles to land clean combinations. This strategic adjustment allowed her to dominate the latter rounds, leaving Connie struggling to find her rhythm.

Conclusion

In the end, Louise’s ability to adapt and utilize her boxing fundamentals led to a decisive victory on points. The judges scored the bout in her favour, 79-73, 79-74, 78-74.
